Nighttime lighting in intensive care units.

چکیده
high acuity of patients, and improved technology have transformed intensive care units (ICUs) into increasingly complex and fast-paced environments where specialized care is provided on a 24-hour basis. Although the necessity of around-the-clock care is easily understood, the environment that is created and the resulting potential sleep disruptions are not always optimal for patients’ healing and successful outcomes. Multifactorial issues, including noise, lighting, patient care activities, vital signs, phlebotomy, and medication administration have often been identified as potential causes of sleep disruptions in the ICU. In a study on nocturnal interruptions of patient care in critical care units, a mean of 42.6 patient care interactions occurred each night, only 9 uninterrupted 2to 3-hour periods of sleep were documented in 147 nights, and 62% of patients’ baths were performed between the hours of 9 PM and 6 AM. متن کاملsleep-care guidelines for minimizing nighttime noise and care-related activities impacted the sleep quality of surgical intensive care unit
In the intensive care unit (ICU), noises, continuous lighting, and constant carerelated activities disrupt patients’ sleep. Patients also may struggle to sleep because they are in an unfamiliar environment, feel isolated, are in pain, have various tubes or other equipment to deal with, as well as just general treatment activities. Meanwhile, nurses are busy managing patients’ critical condition...
متن کاملNighttime intensivist staffing and the timing of death among ICU decedents: a retrospective cohort study
INTRODUCTION Intensive care units (ICUs) are increasingly adopting 24-hour intensivist physician staffing. Although nighttime intensivist staffing does not consistently reduce mortality, it may affect other outcomes such as the quality of end-of-life care. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of ICU decedents using the 2009-2010 Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation clin...
متن کاملComparing mortality among adult, general intensive care units in England with varying intensivist cover patterns: a retrospective cohort study
INTRODUCTION Research has demonstrated that intensivist-led care of the critically ill is associated with reduced intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital mortality. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a relation exists between intensivist cover pattern (for example, number of days of continuous cover) and patient outcomes among adult general ICUs in England. METHODS We conducte...
